今年のトニー賞は順等なというか、サプライズのない結果となりました。《スパマロット》では候補にもならなかったデイヴィッド・ハイド・ピアースと、脚色が上手くいってバカ受けの《ザナドゥ》の脚本家が書いたコメディ《The Little Dog Laughed》の女優ジュリー・ホワイトが受賞したのがうれしいですが (これで来年の候補に《ザナドゥ》が入ってもおかしくない方向になれば...)。スティーヴン・ソンドハイム作品は再演されれば大概受賞するのが当たり前みたいになってるので、来年は《ジョージの恋人》再演が取るでしょう。オスカーとは違うのでフレッド・エッブの最後の作品《Curtains》が功労賞的に受賞なんてことはないのが厳しいビジネスの世界。せっかくリバイバル演劇賞受賞した英国産《旅の終わり》がウェストエンドではロングランだったのに戦場が舞台の暗い話なんで陽気なのが好きなブロードウェイには合わず、入りが芳しくなくこの授賞式の数時間前のマチネでクローズにしてしまいました。もう一週ぐらい待ってみれば違ったかもしれないのにしくじり。
