Bizet's Carmen is one of those rare operas in which every number seems to be a familiar favourite melody. It is jam-packed with sexy solos, rousing choruses, impassioned arias and Spanish dances. Tuneful, colourful, evocative, dramatic... the seemingly endless list of adjectives Carmen regularly invites explains just why this has remained one of the most popular works in the opera repertory since it first appeared on the Paris stage in 1875.
After a surprising break of 12 years, this classic work returns to the Royal Opera repertory in a major new production that features the lavish staging and movement for which director Francesca Zambello is especially known. Two equally strong casts of big names and star voices are headed in turn by Music Director Antonio Pappano then Philippe Auguin. First, Anna Caterina Antonacci plays the fickle Spanish temptress opposite Jonas Kaufmann as Don José, the soldier she forces to murderous jealousy over her new affair with the bullfighter Escamillo, played by Ildebrando d'Arcangelo; Marina Domashenko, Marco Berti and Laurent Naouri later take over this tempestuous trio, while Norah Amsellem then Liping Zhang play the innocent Micaëla, who is unable to stave off the disastrous obsession of her fiancé. Some Spanish heat and passion to provide the antidote to a cold Christmas!
The performance runs approx 3 hours 10 minutes with one interval, 1 hour and 25 minutes into the performance. Latecomers cannot be admitted until the interval.

見に行くつもりだんだけど、無理だったので音だけ (なんとあんなに高額なのに完売とのこと！ポンドのレートって...今の状況じゃ絶対無理！)。アントナッチ姉さんだったらカルメンぴ20ったりだろうけど、演出がフランチェスカ・ザンベッロって...どうかな。でもやっぱり、ミシェル・プラッソンのような細やかなフランス風の音になってないような...。
